Direct Import 40% Deposit Structure vs Local Showroom Price
Paying KES 14 Million on day one locks capital. Placing 40% to secure a direct import keeps the rest working until Nairobi arrival. Here is the clean financial comparison every serious buyer should run.
Most luxury 4x4 purchases in Nairobi follow one pattern: walk into a showroom, agree a price, and wire or bank-transfer close to 100% of the value before the logbook moves. That model is simple. It is also expensive in two ways — you usually pay a retail markup, and you freeze the entire capital stack on day one. Roskyways Direct Import is built on a different equation: 40% initial deposit to secure and ship the vehicle, 60% balance only when it arrives in Nairobi and passes your inspection. Same class of vehicle. Lower total cost. Far better capital velocity.
1. The Two Payment Models Side by Side
Take a representative luxury SUV with a fair direct-landed target of KES 14,000,000.
- ◆Local Showroom Path: You pay approximately KES 14,000,000 to KES 16,500,000 on day one (retail includes yard margin and holding cost). Capital out of your account immediately. Vehicle may already be in Nairobi — or may still be inbound under someone else's structure.
- ◆Roskyways Direct Import Path: You pay approximately KES 5,600,000 (40%) on day one. Remaining KES 8,400,000 stays in your control until the unit is in Nairobi, cleared, and inspected. Total landed cost is typically KES 1.8M to KES 3.2M below equivalent showroom retail on the same specification.
What 40/60 Actually Buys You
The 40% deposit covers overseas acquisition, inspection, ocean freight booking, and our concierge coordination. The 60% balance is due on Nairobi arrival — not on a promise, not on a bill of lading photo. You inspect before you complete.
2. Capital Velocity: Why Liquidity Matters More Than Sticker Price
If you run a business, a practice, or a portfolio in Nairobi, KES 8 Million sitting idle for 8–12 weeks has a real cost. That capital could be covering payroll float, securing stock, or earning short-term yield. The Direct Import structure keeps that money working until the asset is physically in your hands. Showroom purchase does the opposite: it converts liquid capital into a depreciating parked asset on day one, often at a premium.
- 01Day 1 (Showroom): 100% capital deployed. Zero residual liquidity from that pool.
- 02Day 1 (Direct Import): 40% capital deployed. 60% still liquid and productive.
- 03Week 10–12 (Direct Import): Balance paid against a vehicle you have seen, verified, and accepted in Nairobi.
3. Where the Savings Actually Come From
Direct Import is not magic. The cost advantage is structural:
- ◆No local holding margin: Showcase and yard operators price in rent, insurance, and slow stock. Direct Import prices the metal, the freight, and the tax — not months of parking.
- ◆Source-market pricing: Japan and UK auction and dealer prices are transparent. You buy closer to wholesale, not closer to Nairobi retail.
- ◆Duty certainty: KRA figures are calculated before deposit on official CRSP schedules. You do not discover a KES 900,000 tax gap at Mombasa.
4. When Showroom Still Makes Sense
Direct Import is not always the right tool. If you need a vehicle this week for a site visit, a family move, or a client-facing role, our Local Showcase stock (zero holding-cost partnership units) is the correct path — you drive out the same day. Direct Import wins when you have a 8–12 week horizon, a clear specification, and a preference for lower total cost plus capital control. Many of our clients use both: Showcase for immediate need, Direct Import for the primary long-term vehicle.

Quick answers
Is the 40% deposit refundable if the vehicle fails inspection?
+
If a unit fails agreed inspection gates before shipping, we do not ship it — we re-source or reverse the acquisition path under the terms set at briefing. Post-arrival, you inspect before paying the 60% balance. We do not ask you to complete on a vehicle that misses the brief.
Does 40/60 apply to both Japan and UK sourcing?
+
Yes. Whether the vehicle is acquired in Japan or the UK, the commercial structure remains 40% to initiate and 60% on Nairobi arrival and acceptance.
