Kenya Vehicle Age Limit Rules for 2026 Car Imports
Importing a car close to the 8-year age limit? Missing the cut-off date by even one day means KRA rejects the vehicle at Mombasa port, leading to mandatory re-exportation.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) under Legal Notice No. 78 and Code of Practice KS 1515:2000 strictly enforces the 8-year age limit rule for motor vehicle imports into Kenya. Understanding how this rule is calculated is vital—importers who miscalculate cut-off dates face total loss, as customs authorities in Mombasa will strictly reject non-compliant vehicles.
The 2026 Cut-Off Rule Matrix
In the calendar year 2026, the 8-year rule is calculated by subtracting 8 from the current year (2026 - 8 = 2018).
Official 2026 Import Standard
For the year 2026, the oldest allowable vehicle year of first registration is 2018. Any vehicle first registered in 2017 or earlier CANNOT be imported into Kenya.
The Dangerous Month-of-Registration Trap
Many individual importers assume that any 2018 vehicle can be imported anytime in 2026. This is false and dangerous. KEBS calculates the age based on the exact MONTH and YEAR of first registration.
For example: A vehicle first registered in Japan in March 2018 must land and clear customs at the Port of Mombasa BEFORE March 31, 2026. If the ship experiences delays and the vessel berths on April 2, 2026, the vehicle is officially 8 years and 1 month old, breaching KS 1515:2000 regulations.
What Happens If a Vehicle Breaches the Age Limit?
KRA and KEBS enforce zero tolerance at the Port of Mombasa. If a car arrives past the 8-year limit, the owner has only two choices:
- 01Mandatory Re-Exportation: The vehicle must be shipped back to its origin country at the owner's expense within 30 days.
- 02Crushing / Destruction: Failure to re-export results in KRA impounding and crushing the vehicle at customs yards.
Safe Shipping Timelines & Buffers
To avoid shipping delay disasters near cut-off months, Roskyways recommends the following minimum safety buffers:
- ◆Japan Imports: Allow a 60-day buffer between auction purchase and cut-off month.
- ◆UK Imports: Allow a 75-day buffer due to longer vessel transit times.
- ◆UAE / Dubai Imports: Allow a 45-day buffer (fastest shipping lane to Mombasa).
When you buy a vehicle directly from Roskyways inventory, we guarantee 100% compliance. For custom imports, we verify all export certificates and registration documents before taking a single shilling deposit.
