KRA Car Import Duty 8-Year Age Limit Kenya 2026: Depreciation, Cut-Off Dates & Compliance

Importing a car into Kenya in 2026? The strict 8-year age limit means only vehicles manufactured in 2019 or newer are legally eligible for entry at Mombasa. Here is how KRA counts age, applies CRSP depreciation, and how to avoid port rejection.

Every year, hundreds of car importers in Kenya face devastating financial losses at the Port of Mombasa due to a single compliance error: miscalculating the 8-year age limit enforced jointly by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS under KS 1515:2000), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). For the calendar year 2026, the law is absolute: no right-hand drive vehicle manufactured before January 1, 2019 can clear customs at Mombasa. If a vehicle manufactured in 2018 arrives at the port in 2026, it cannot be registered — it must be re-exported or destroyed at the owner's expense. Understanding how age is measured, how KRA applies depreciation against official CRSP benchmarks, and how to time port arrival protects both your vehicle and your capital.

1. How Age Is Counted: YOM vs Year of First Registration

The most common and expensive trap for buyers is confusing Year of First Registration (YOFR) with Year of Manufacture (YOM). Car dealerships abroad and online portals often display the registration year prominently. However, KEBS and KRA evaluate eligibility strictly by the physical Year of Manufacture.

  • ◆Year of Manufacture (YOM): The exact calendar year and month the chassis was produced on the assembly line in Japan, UK, Thailand, or UAE. This is stamped on the vehicle chassis plate and recorded in official export documentation (e.g., Japanese Export Certificate).
  • ◆Year of First Registration (YOFR): The year the vehicle was first registered and licensed to drive on public roads. A vehicle manufactured in December 2018 but first sold and registered in March 2019 is legally a 2018 vehicle under Kenyan law and IS ILLEGAL TO IMPORT IN 2026.
  • ◆Verification Shield: Before placing a deposit on any overseas unit, Roskyways verifies the underlying chassis code against OEM factory databases to confirm actual YOM compliance.

2. The KRA CRSP Depreciation Schedule (0% to 70%)

KRA does not calculate import duty based on what you paid for the car at auction. Instead, customs duty is calculated off the official Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) handbook, which establishes a benchmark original showroom value in Kenya for every vehicle variant by Model Code. KRA then applies a standardized annual depreciation discount based on the vehicle's age.

  1. 01Age 0 to 1 Year: 10% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 90% of CRSP)
  2. 02Age 1 to 2 Years: 15% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 85% of CRSP)
  3. 03Age 2 to 3 Years: 20% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 80% of CRSP)
  4. 04Age 3 to 4 Years: 30% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 70% of CRSP)
  5. 05Age 4 to 5 Years: 40% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 60% of CRSP)
  6. 06Age 5 to 6 Years: 50% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 50% of CRSP)
  7. 07Age 6 to 7 Years: 60% depreciation (Dutiable Value = 40% of CRSP)
  8. 08Age 7 to 8 Years (8th Year Limit): 70% max allowable depreciation (Dutiable Value = 30% of CRSP)

CRSP Math Example: 2019 Toyota Prado TX-L 2.7L Petrol

For a Toyota Prado TX-L 70th Anniversary Edition (Model Code 3BA-TRJ150W), KRA lists a benchmark CRSP base value of KES 8,452,717. In its 8th year (2019 model clearing in 2026), KRA applies 70% depreciation. The dutiable Customs Value drops to 30% of base (KES 2,535,815). The full tax stack (25% Import Duty + 20% Excise + 16% VAT + 2.5% IDF + 2.0% RDL) is then calculated off this reduced customs base, delivering the lowest legal duty total.

3. The Port Arrival Window & December 31 Risk

Eligibility is determined by the date of customs vessel arrival in Mombasa, not the date you purchased or shipped the car overseas. Ocean transit from Japan takes 25 to 35 days, while transit from the UK takes 30 to 45 days.

  • ◆The Cut-Off Barrier: A 2019 vehicle imported in late 2026 MUST arrive at Mombasa Port on or before December 31, 2026. If vessel delays push arrival to January 1, 2027, the vehicle automatically becomes 9 years old in KRA's system and is rejected.
  • ◆Safe Sourcing Window: To avoid ocean freight delay risks, we recommend placing your import brief for an 8th-year vehicle no later than September 30 of that calendar year.

4. Why Roskyways Direct Import Protects You

At Roskyways, every vehicle brief goes through a multi-layer verification audit before any financial commitment:

  • ◆Chassis YOM Audit: Physical verification of manufacture month and year against OEM databases.
  • ◆CRSP Model Code Locking: Exact duty lookup using official KRA codes (e.g., TRJ150W vs GDJ150W vs GDJ151W).
  • ◆40/60 Capital Protection: You place a 40% initial deposit to secure and ship. The 60% balance is paid only after the vehicle arrives in Nairobi and passes your physical inspection.

Quick answers

What happens if a vehicle is manufactured in December 2018 but registered in 2019?

+

Under KEBS standard KS 1515:2000, it is classified strictly as a 2018 vehicle based on manufacture date. In 2026, it is 8 years and 1 month old and will be banned from entry at Mombasa Port.

Can I get an exemption from the 8-year import rule?

+

Exemptions are extremely rare and restricted strictly to returning Kenyan diplomats or foreign embassy personnel under diplomatic immunity. Standard commercial and personal imports have zero exemption allowance.
